NASA has tapped Elon Musk’s SpaceX to determine a method to allow ships to refuel in orbit. The space agency introduced Tuesday.
According to a news release, SpaceX will assist in advancing propulsion technology — particularly, NASA has tasked SpaceX to resolve the issue of in-space refueling, which might be groundbreaking because it’s never been done before.
SpaceX may also work with the Kennedy Space Center in Florida within the development of the technology needed to land giant rockets on the surface of the moon vertically.
Thirteen corporations have been chosen for 19 partnerships with NASA to advance business space and future NASA missions.
“NASA’s proven experience and unique amenities are serving to commercial firms mature their technologies at an aggressive pace,” mentioned Jim Reuter, associate administrator of NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD), within the press release. “We’ve recognized technology areas NASA wants for future missions, and these public-private partnerships will speed up their improvement so we can implement them faster.”
The discharge stated that the partnerships and their focuses should be critical for NASA’s plan to land people on the moon by 2024. NASA hopes to use that moon mission as a stepping stone for a crewed mission to Mars.
There are seven particular focus areas that NASA divided corporations into. These include advanced communications, advanced materials, entry/descent/landing, in-space manufacturing and assembly, power, propulsion, and other exploration technologies.
Aside from SpaceX, other notable firms chosen for partnerships include Blue Origin, Maxar Technologies, Langley, and Lockheed Martin.
