A team of Project Zero at Google have shared particulars of five flaws in Apple’s iMessage software that would make its gadgets vulnerable to attack.
In one case, the researchers mentioned the vulnerability was so severe that the only way to rescue a focused iPhone could be to delete all the data off it.
Another instance, they stated, might be used to copy files off a tool without requiring the owner to do something to aid the hack.
Apple launched fixes last week.
However, the researchers mentioned that they had additionally flagged the sixth problem to Apple, which had not been rectified within the update to its mobile operating system.
“That is quite uncommon,” commented Prof Alan Woodward, a cyber-security expert at the University of Surrey.
“The reputation of the Google Zero team is such that it’s value taking notice of.”
The Project Zero team was established in July 2014 to uncover previously undocumented cyber-vulnerabilities. It has previously alerted Microsoft, Facebook, and Samsung, among others, to issues with their code.
Apple’s own notes about iOS 12.4 indicate that the unfixed flaw may give hackers a method to crash an app or execute instructions of their very own on recent iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches if they had been able to discover it.
Apple has not commented on this particular issue, however, has urged customers to install the brand new version of iOS, which addresses Google’s different discoveries as well as a further range of glitches and threats.
